This talk will deal primarily with hypothesis testing based on p-values, a flexible approach with minimal reliance on parametric assumptions. Two types of situations will be covered: Separate tests of hypotheses on individual parameters, and pairwise comparisons of values of these parameters. I will discuss current methods and their error control and power properties and will illustrate some of the issues by applications in education and in microarray analysis. Unsolved problems relevant to the properties of these methods, both conceptual and computational, will be described. \bye
